By now, you have seen all the memes, Whales at Westshore, Kayakers on Kenndey, people have even taken to using jet skis to get around town. But what you might not have thought about is what exactly is in that water. Gulfport confirmed today, August 4th, that it had closed the municipal beach because heavy rain and saturated soil had caused sewage systems to backup into Boca Ciega Bay. Besides fecal contamination, the flood waters carry a myriad of other chemicals that are harmful and/or toxic to your pet. The flood waters can contain almost any amount of contaminants that leak out of your car or was washed out of a construction zone. Please keep this in mind while walking your dogs. Never let your dog play or swim in the flood water. If your dog comes in contact with the flood water, you should immediately give your dog a bath with warm soapy water. After exposure to flood water keep an eye on your dog. If your dog shows signs of sickness you should immediately contact your vet.
